Woodland and Forestry
Holt is the Saxon word for wood. The woodland is “semi-ancient” mainly beech, oak and ash interspersed with areas of softwood. Woods need managing and we have just embarked on a twenty year woodland management plan which involves thinning the trees, removing introduced softwood trees and coppicing hazel and chestnut. We are also widening open rides to encourage a broad range of flora and fauna including a number of butterflies. We have installed a woodfuel biomass boiler which produces hot water and heating for five properties (including the Old Workshop) using wood chipped from the estate and a log boiler to heat a further two cottages.
B OUTSIDE FOREST SCHOOL
We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Rebecca Prior to bring B Outside Forest School to The Holt.
Forest School gives all those that attend choice. Choice to choose how they spend their time, doing what relaxes them or challenges them. Working collaboratively, creatively and with curiosity. Learning to communicate, become a ‘craftsman’ and to commit to a tasks of physical nature.
Much of this is discovered through play, allowing ourselves to play and take time to rediscover the simplicity of nature, the outdoors and time away from ‘life’ and ‘routine’ has deep and far-reaching impacts on us all.
